Poem for Mothers: Forever Blessed by That Kid
76Blessed by that Smile

Once there was a lady… she was a painter, teacher, and author.
Then….she had a baby boy. How she loved her baby boy.
As soon as she found out she was expecting she painted the nursery, bought children’s books, and wrote songs for her new child.
When her baby was born she held him in her arms and promised him she would be there.
Every day the boy would wake her up in the morning and ask her to make him breakfast. She would make him oatmeal with berries.
While he ate his oatmeal she would read him stories. They would play peek-a-boo on the couch together. His smile brightened the room.
She took him to the grocery store. Strangers would smile at her boy and he would smile back.
Her boy extended her world more than she could have ever imagined. He had two big dimples and hair that was naturally spiked. Most of those days were filled with laughter and joy.
He would climb onto his Momma’s lap as she read him books, tickled his tummy, and played the guitar.
And when he was tired he would rub his eyes and she would pick him up.
She would rock him to sleep and he loved his Momma and his Momma loved him. Momma and the boy were happy, very happy.
But as time went by the boy grew up.
He started to go to school and Momma missed the boy.
As the boy learned to read the old children’s books became dusty. Momma missed reading to him.
As the boy grew he asked his Momma for money so he could take art classes. Momma gave him the money and took him to the classes.
As the boy learned to create art from another lady, Momma waited for him in the car. Momma loved her boy…and the boy loved his Momma.
The boy grew older he started to get phone calls from girls. Momma was happy because he was happy but she missed her boy.
Then in the blink of an eye he was gone. He was off to discover who he wanted to be. The boy was happy and so was Momma.
The boy stayed away for a long time…and Momma grew lonely for the boy.
One day the boy came home to surprise Momma and she said, “Come in boy I’ll make you oatmeal and berries and you can tell me about your life.”
He said, “Momma I can only stay a while I’m off to visit my girlfriend’s parents. I’m gonna ask her to be my wife".
In a flash he was gone…but Momma was happy because he was happy.
And so the boy grew into a man and got married….and Momma watched. The man was happy and so was Momma. The man was busy with his new job and wife.
Momma called but he didn’t have much time to talk. Momma missed her boy but she knew this was right. He was now a man with his own life. Momma was happy because he was happy.
The man had his own boy, wife, and job… Momma became less and less a part of his life. The man loved his Momma but there wasn't much time to see her in his busy life.
When Momma grew old and became ill the man sat by her side.
He said, “Momma why did you give up your art, work, and music when I came into your life?”
His Momma said, “Son I never gave up my art, work, or music when you came into my life. You my boy were the art, work, and music of my life. When you left I didn't have the desire to go back to art, work, and music because being your Momma was the real work of my life”.
The man began to cry he missed the time he had with his Momma when he was a young boy.
His Momma said, “Please Son, don’t feel sad. When you came into my life you extended my world with your smile and your joy. All those years I got to watch you grow. I learned as much from you as you learned from me".
And so the boy hugged his Momma and told her he loved her and appreciated everything she did. His Momma drifted off to sleep knowing she was forever blessed by that kid.

What a beautiful story! Our children are indeed our work and glory. Everything we do is for and because of them. When the time comes that they will take our place, then they will understand and appreciate all that we did for them.
Awww Kelley. You have epitomized the essence of motherhood in this Hub! Glad to have read this piece. Of course we are blowing our nose and..just came back from getting some Kleenex. Thanks for your wonderful piece!
LORD
Beautiful story! Reminds me of the book "I'll Love You Forever". Brought tears to my eyes!
Thank you for such a wonderful story. My son just turned 4 and I´m trying to enjoy every moment.
How appropriate that I am reading this hub today. My little boy turned 6 today and after reading your words I just want to hold him in my arms forever. Absolutely loved it - voted up and beautiful!
Awesome - I agree with practicalmommy - reminds me of "I'll Love You Forever" a story that makes me cry every time I read it - just as your story brought tears to my eyes! Great write!
A really lovely hub, and all so true. It brought a few tears to my eye. Voted up and (really) beautiful.
I'm in love with this story of the boy and his mom's love. Me and my mom had also parted ways many years back, and I felt the urge to break away as soon as I got to college, because she was always over protective of me as a child. This is a beautifully written hub by the way all it needs is a slight bit more imagery & spacing to top it off.
My mom did an amazing job with me and my four brothers, we had no sisters unfortunately. I loved my mom dearly and she passed away in 2006 from breast cancer, while I was in the US Navy.
Reading this hub of yours has brought back many memories, and so it is touching in more ways than most people reading this can imagine. Thank you for sharing such a heart felt, and truthful to life story, and I'm sure others will feel the same. This one is getting shared up on my cloud sharing system, as well as all my other social sharing elements I have at my disposal.
Awesome hub! you've also earned a new fan.
What a beautiful story. It came from the heart and touched my heart. I found myself thinking of my girls and how much I miss tyhem now that they are grown. How true it is that we are blessed by our children. Up, awesome and beautiful.
This is very sweet, and though I have girls not boys, I can relate. I don’t know how many times I’ve felt sheer astonishment when I look at my children and marvel at the way life is created. Blessed, yes, that’s certainly true.
My children are not only grown, they're reaching middle age,but I still remember those precious years when they were babies and toddlers. All mothers can relate to the need to let them fly from the nest. Lovely story, Kelley....Jaye
Indeed.
And a daughter, too.
Voted up.
Beautiful Hub! Thanks for sharing! I can relate so well - I have three boys, two in college, and one in high school. There are times when I miss them so much, my heart aches! I am happy that they are pursuing their dreams and try my best to remain in contact with them daily - just a simple, "Have a good day - Love, Mom" (thank God for texting!). The book that your other followers mention, "I Love You Forever" is also my all time favorite! Although, my middle son recently shared with me that he thought the book was kind of "creepy"! LOL! Thanks again for such a sweet hub!
Thanks for this personal piece, yet it will touch many who, like me, have grown up children who have flown the nest. Keep writing!
Beautiful story Kelly. My boys keep moving in and out of the house. It's like I have a swinging front door :) I love them dearly so I'm always happy to have them home ... but one of these days it would be nice to see them all married and living on their own.
Awwwww to your poem and your first born!!! Happy Mother's Day :)
